Hare Krishna: It’s The Voice of Calm Podcast Episode 6!
Ah, Hare Krishna, it’s episode 6 of The Voice of Calm Podcast, how marvellous. This week is all about karma, good intentions, self realisation and, weirdly, Avengers End Game!
When I was a kid, growing up in Ipswich, my auntie told me not to take sweets from the ‘Hare Krishnas’ because they had drugs in them. Hmmmm. When I moved to London at 19 I worked in Soho and would walk past the Hare Krishna temple daily. Orange robes, white trainers, tambourines and bells: they seemed like nice people and I doubted very much that they were handing out free drugs in Soho. The entire film and TV industry would have been queueing round the block, surely.
In my spiritual journey over the years I have taken bits and pieces from different faiths, never wishing to commit to any particular one. I had always considered mindfulness to be a Buddhist concept but when I read the Bhagavad Gita, the 5000 year old Hindu text where yoga is first mentioned, I was surprised to see it describe mindfulness.
Surely, this was the wrong religion for mindfulness?
So I explored further and discovered that the UK Hare Krishna headquarters was less than an hours drive from me. Bhaktivedanta Manor was donated to the Hare Krishnas by Beatle, George Harrison who was himself a devotee. Listen to ‘My Sweet Lord’ and you’ll hear.
So, on Tuesday I spent a few hours with Balaram. A monk for 9 years and now head of media at the manor, he opened my mind to some beautiful concepts and corrected me on a few misconceptions. We chatted about quitting alcohol, reincarnation, karma, meditation, mantra and so much more.
